Homes and buildings in Madurai
Madurai is one of the oldest cities in Tamil Nadu, laid out around the Meenakshi Amman Temple with streets running in rough squares around it. The old city is tightly built, with houses and shops sharing walls. Beyond it, residential areas such as Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Tallakulam, SS Colony and Thirunagar are mostly independent houses and small apartment buildings, with newer apartments coming up along the Bypass Road and the outer areas.
Most net and grill work in Madurai is on independent houses and low-rise flats: open terraces, staircases, front balconies, windows with sunshades and the narrow gaps between neighbouring buildings. Each opening is measured on site, because few of them are a standard size.
Madurai's weather and the right materials
Madurai is hot for most of the year, with summer temperatures often around 40°C, and it gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon between October and December. Months of strong sun make UV-stabilised netting essential, since untreated net turns brittle quickly. The city is well inland, so 304-grade stainless steel is normally enough for invisible grills.
Pigeons and birds in Madurai
Pigeons gather in large numbers around Madurai's temple towers and markets, and from there they spread to nearby houses, settling on sunshades, parapets and in the gaps between closely built walls. Crows and mynas are common in the residential areas. A taut, well-sealed net keeps them out of balconies, windows and courtyards without harming them.
Child and balcony safety in Madurai
Many Madurai houses have open terraces, external staircases and upper-floor balconies with low parapets. Safety nets are a practical, affordable way to make these safer for children, and they can be cut to almost any shape. For apartments, and for windows where a clear view matters, invisible grills are a neat alternative to heavy iron grills.
Drying clothes in Madurai homes
Clothes dry fast in Madurai's heat, but strong sun fades fabric and terrace drying means carrying loads up and down stairs. A ceiling or wall-mounted hanger in a shaded balcony or utility area is easier on both clothes and people.
