Madurai is one of the oldest cities in Tamil Nadu, laid out around the Meenakshi Amman Temple with streets running in rough squares around it. The old city is tightly built, with houses and shops sharing walls. Beyond it, residential areas such as Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Tallakulam, SS Colony and Thirunagar are mostly independent houses and small apartment buildings, with newer apartments coming up along the Bypass Road and the outer areas.

Madurai is hot for most of the year, with summer temperatures often around 40°C, and it gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon between October and December. Months of strong sun make UV-stabilised netting essential, since untreated net turns brittle quickly. The city is well inland, so 304-grade stainless steel is normally enough for invisible grills.
